How it works
Book directly on Airbnb — we make the match.
Every experience below is run by a host we know and trust. Bookings go through Airbnb (safe payment, free cancellation), but we're happy to advise on which experience fits your travel style, plan the route from our house, and introduce you to the host beforehand.
Not sure which one? Ask usKimono Tea Ceremony in a Kyoto Townhouse
Slow down and share a bowl of matcha in an old machiya
Step off the bustling street into a hushed machiya. Your host walks you through the history of wabi-sabi and the quiet choreography of the tea ceremony — then invites you to whisk your own bowl of matcha in the garden-facing tea room.
- Private tatami room in a restored townhouse
- Learn the whisking of matcha from a certified host
- Optional kimono dressing available
Home Cooking Class with a Kyoto Local
Shop the neighbourhood market, then cook a seasonal washoku meal
Join a Kyoto home cook as she leads you through her favourite greengrocers, tofu makers and fishmongers. Back in her kitchen you learn the basics of dashi, pickles and a seasonal main — then everyone sits down for lunch.
- Morning market walk around Enmachi
- Cook four seasonal Japanese dishes
- Sit down and share the meal together
Fushimi Sake Brewery Walking Tour
Taste Kyoto's famous soft water sake straight from the barrel
Fushimi is one of Japan's three great sake regions, blessed with soft mineral water and centuries of craft. Walk its willow-lined canals with a sake-loving guide, tour a family brewery and taste your way from crisp junmai to rich aged kijoshu.
- Visit historic Fushimi sake breweries
- Guided tasting of 6–8 sake styles
- Canal-side walk through a working brewery town
Hidden Back-Streets Walking Tour
The Kyoto the guidebooks miss — lanes, workshops and tiny shrines
Skip the crowds of Kiyomizu and Gion. Starting from our home in Nijo, we wander the quiet grid of Enmachi, stop at sentō-side coffee stands, say hello to the tofu-maker and end with a cold Kyoto craft beer.
- Small-group walking tour of a local neighbourhood
- Meet craftspeople in their ateliers
- Sip coffee at a hidden kissaten along the way
Zen Morning at a Hidden Temple
Sit zazen with a monk before the tourist buses arrive
Before Kyoto wakes up, cycle with us through empty streets to a small Zen temple that rarely sees visitors. Learn the posture and breathing, sit in silence, then share tea with the monk in the abbot's quarters.
- Early-morning zazen in a quiet sub-temple
- Personal guidance from a practising monk
- Walk the moss garden in silence afterwards
